As you drive down 460 through Sussex County you might  see fields of peanut plants on either side of road. When you make your way through Wakefield or Franklin you might see the large silos of Birdsong Peanuts and the charming stores like Virginia Peanut Company Gourmet Market, Plantation Peanuts, and Wakefield Peanut Company. As you venture on the Suffolk you will discover the original home of Planters and the birthplace of Mr. Peanut.

The soil and weather conditions of southeastern Virginia seem to be ideal for growing peanuts. Peanuts originated in South America, but found their way to Virginia by way of Africa. Even though peanuts were grown in colonial gardens, since the 1700s, it was not until the late nineteenth century that peanuts became a commercial crop.

The growth of the peanut industry was essential to the development of of the rural communities along the Salty Southern Route. Here are some of the places you can visit today for delicious Virginia peanuts.
